OpenAI’s ChatGPT faced a massive global outage yesterday with thousands of users unable to access the AI chatbot. According to Downdetector, the outage began at 5 PM IST yesterday with complaints reported from users slowing down by 8 PM eventually.
Users said they couldn’t open either the website or the app with the website showing a banner message saying, “Bad gateway.”
OpenAI informed users on X about the reason saying, “ChatGPT and some of our APIs had high error rates earlier due to an issue with our provider. We’ve issued a fix and should be fully recovered soon. Thanks for your patience!”
Once the issue was resolved, the status page on the OpenAI website was updated with, “Between 4:23am and 7:10am PST, customers experienced elevated errors on ChatGPT.”
The outage disrupted work for people with many taking to X to mention how dependent they were on the chatbot.
“A good measure of the importance of some infrastructure is how upsetting it is to your workflow when it suddenly doesn’t work. Anyways, ChatGPT is down right now,” Christian Hendriksen, Assistant Professor at Copenhagen Business School tweeted.
