WhatsApp rolls out AI summaries for unread messages

WhatsApp has started rolling out a feature to summarise unread messages in chats. The update will be made available in English in the U.S. now and expanded later to multiple languages and countries, a blog posted by the platform said.

The feature will be disabled by default and users will have to turn the option on via Advanced Chat Privacy and then selecting which chats can be shared for AI features.

Once enabled, users can click on the icon that appears next to the unread messages notification, which then summarises them in bullet points.

“Message Summaries uses Private Processing technology, which allows Meta AI to generate a response without Meta or WhatsApp ever seeing your messages or the private summaries. No one else in the chat can see that you summarized unread messages either,” the WhatsApp blog post stated.

Meta has steadily been integrating AI features onto the messaging platform. Earlier in March, a new AI-powered widget was introduced for easy access to the AI chatbot. In April, it rolled out real-time AI image generation on WhatsApp.
