A Google Cloud outage that lasted for several hours on June 12 affected hugely popular online platforms such as Spotify, Discord, Google, AWS, Snapchat, and others across the world, until the issue was fixed.
Downdetector, which compiles user reports of platform outages, recorded over 13,000 Google Cloud outage reports in the last 24 hours, with many reports pointing to issues with the server connection. Most of these reports came from major U.S. cities such as Chicago, New York, San Francisco, and Atlanta.
Meanwhile, over 1,000 reports were logged in India.
As per the status updates from Google Cloud, issues were noticed on June 12 at 10:51 PDT and continued until all services were fully restored at 18:18 PDT. The outage was widespread and affected cities all over the world, including Mumbai and Delhi.
Google initially noted that multiple Google Cloud Platform products were experiencing varying levels of impacted services, and continued to provide updates. The root cause was identified, but Google said it would publish an analysis of this incident once it has completed its internal investigation.
A number of Google offerings were also affected, including Google App Engine, Google BigQuery, Google Cloud Bigtable, Google Cloud Composer, Google Cloud Console, Google Cloud DNS, Google Cloud Dataflow, Google Cloud SQL, Google Cloud Storage, and Google Compute Engine, amongst others.
“Vertex AI Online Prediction is full recovered as of 18:18 PDT. All the services are fully recovered from the service issue[.] We will publish analysis of this incident once we have completed our internal investigation. We thank you for your patience while we worked on resolving the issue,” posted Google Cloud on its service health webpage.
Google Cloud's revenue last year came to $43.2 billion, which represents a 31% increase from 2023, reported AP.
Almost a year ago, a buggy update from the American cybersecurity company CrowdStrike led to outages for millions of devices using certain versions of Microsoft Windows. The outage disrupted the aviation industry, medical appointments all over the world, and even stopped many digital payments.
