OpenAI launches new AI reasoning models o3 and 04-mini; older models to be phased out

OpenAI has released their latest AI reasoning models: o3 and the o4-mini. The models will also have “multimodal understanding,” the company said, and will be able to process images in their chain-of-thought process. 

In a blog post released with the announcement, OpenAI has said that o3 is their “most powerful reasoning model” yet while the 04-mini being a smaller model “achieves remarkable performance for its size and cost.” 

“They are very capable. o4-mini is a ridiculously good deal for the price. they can use and combine every tool within chatgpt,” CEO Sam Altman said in a post on X.

This indicates that the reasoning models will be able to use ChatGPT tools like image generation and web browsing. 

The models will be available for ChatGPT Plus, Pro and Team users. The company also said that as o4-mini-high and o3-pro will be out in a few weeks, older models like o1,o3-mini and o3-mini-high will be phased out. 

OpenAI further announced a new open-source project called Codex CLI, an AI agent optimised for coding tasks. Developers can access the agent through the computer terminal.
