Instagram removing content notes feature due to low adoption

Instagram is getting rid of a content note sharing feature for posts and reels, due to low uptake by users, said Meta’s Instagram head Adam Mosseri.

“We’re going to turn off the ability to share a note on posts or reels, a feature we launched last year that didn’t end up seeing a lot of adoption. We’ll keep exploring ways to make Instagram more fun and social, but content notes wasn’t it. We’re going to keep simplifying Instagram where we can, which inevitably means being willing to turn off features that aren’t widely used. More to come,” posted Mosseri on Instagram on March 27, along with a video of himself explaining the decision.

Content notes are short thoughts or updates up to 60 characters in length that users could attach to their profiles or to different types of media content to share with their followers and Close Friends. Content notes can be viewed for three days. However, the need for content notes was not clear, as users could easily re-share their thoughts via Stories, Channels, and even posts without facing a character limit.

Mosseri acknowledged that not many people adopted content notes. However, the feature for sharing notes from one’s profile still appears to be up.

Mosseri further added that as Instagram was growing complicated over the years, the company would be phasing out features that were not widely adopted.
