Activision discloses use of generative AI in ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops 6’ game

Game-maker Activision disclosed that it used generative AI in order to “help develop some in game assets,” for the game ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops 6,’ per the notice on its Steam page.

Game players had previously noticed some telltale signs of AI-generated content, such as the wrong number of fingers on a character’s hand, as well as other possibly AI-generated media content, reported tech outlet The Verge.

The use of Gen AI in fields such as gaming is a thorny issue, as many fans are reluctant to support products with AI-generated art instead of human art. The alleged harvesting of copyrighted data in order to power AI image generators is another area of ethical concern.

In January 2024, Microsoft fired 2,000 gaming unit employees from Activision and Xbox. This took place after it acquired Activision Blizzard.
